Introduction of Generator
Introduction of GeneratorA generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Electricity generation requires a magnetic field and an armature. The armature coil or magnetic field is rotated with the help of a mechanical force, the device which rotates is called prime mover.
Classifications of Generator
Generators can be mainly divided into two categories:
1. AC generator 2. DC Generator
AC Generator
The machine with the help of which mechanical energy is converted into AC electrical energy is called AC generator. AC generators are divided into two categories based on usage :-
1. Single phase Ac Generator 2. Three phase Ac Generator
Working Principal of AC Generator
The working principle of AC generator is based on Farad’s principle of electromagnetic induction. In an AC generator, the armature or stator is stationary, and the field coil is rotated within the armature. When the field coil is rotated by a prime mover with a DC supply, an alternating magnetic field is produced in the field or rotor. Which in the next period of Farad’s electromagnetic induction principle is placed in the armature or stator and generates AC voltage. Now this AC voltage is brought into the external circuit with the help of slip Rings and Carbon brushes and is supplied to the load. This is how the AC generator works.
