Introduction of dc Generator
The machine with the help of which mechanical energy is converted into DC electrical energy is called DC generator. DC generators are mainly of two types namely:
1. Self Excited Generator
2. Separately excited generators.
Working Principal of Dc Generator
A DC generator requires an armature and a magnetic field to convert mechanical energy into DC electrical energy. Conductor coil is placed on top of the armature and it is rotated in the magnetic field with the help of prime mover. As a result, a commutating EMF is produced in the armature coil according to Farad’s principle of electro-magnetic induction. Now commutator is used to convert the converted EMF voltage into DC voltage. Through the commutator, the alternating voltage in the armature coil is converted into DC voltage and brought out. This is how the DC generator works.
